Myology

Myology is the scientific study of muscles and their accessory structures. Any movement of an animal's body is due to muscular contraction. Muscle tissues act together and can be considered the active organs of locomotion. All muscles are located above the carpus and hock. They function similarly as a puppeteer with a marionette (leg bones & tendons) creating leg movement, moving the body over the leg and ground. Muscle mass accounts for 70% of the body. Muscles and other soft connective tissue are not only responsible for locomotion, but respiration, excretion, mastication, and partuition. Thus healthy muscle functioning is not only needed for peak performance, but also for daily living.

Muscle Injuries cause pain, gait abnormalities, stiffness, work resistance, reduced range of motion, poor behavior, performance decline, reduced stamina and compromised proprioceptive function.

Stress Points are a result of micro-tearing of fibers and form a ‘knot' that hold a portion of a muscle in spasm.

Trigger Points are tiny nodules of accumulated cellular waste products around nerve receptors causing muscle tension and pain.

Atrophy occurs from direct pressure by saddles & equipment that restrict circulation, muscle tissue dies and is replaced with scar tissue.

Neuromuscular Failure can occur from damaged myofibrils.

Massage is a healing modality to facilitate health and injury recovery of muscles and other connective tissues by addressing tightness, poor circulation, stress points and trigger points. When muscle tissue is damaged the body's own repair process begins by releasing materials in the area without discrimination. The excess and waste material can cause secondary problems for the fascia tissue. Modalities such as Myofascial Release and Acupressure are needed to address the secondary issues.
