Acupressure

Acupressure Points

Acupressure can be utilized as a modality to address muscle and other connective tissue ailments and disease. It is based on the Chinese Medicine theory of Qi “life force energy” circulation throughout the body in channels. The flow of energy through the channels is similar to the flow of electricity through a machine. So, if the electricity (Qi) cannot flow, the machine cannot function correctly or perhaps not at all. In the horse's body these blockages may result from trauma or injury, poor nutrition, hormonal imbalances or even emotional issues. One common ailment that effects horses is Painful Obstructive Syndrome (POS). The major channels are located between the skin and muscles, thus allowing easy accessiblity by hand.

Acupoints along the channels are manipulated with light finger pressure to restore the health flow of Qi. These points are usually tender to the touch due to excess or deficient Qi levels. The excess condition may cause POS. The excess or deficient condition will subside after stimulation. Most channels are interrelated and affecting one can help balanced another.

As well, Acupoints are comprised of nerve endings thus we can access the body's internal pharmacy via peripheral nerve stimulation. Specific points stimulate the release of endorphins, sedatives, and corticosteroids. This can increase circulation, relief pain and muscle tension along with facilitating cellular metabolism.
